| • Moss, Lichen Catherine• Female • Seventeen • Junior • • Lich [Like], Lich [Litch], Lich [Laich] Li, Lie • Heterosexual • Student • Hoshii Miki • "So to speak, you are a hero, Lichen! Even if you are the top student, you are also poorest in the school. People will call you a weed, and you will be despised as a lower person! Don't worry, I praise the poorest! What is important to the hero is the reckless spirit!" ✬ Picture Day ✬"Beauty is as vain as these cherry blossoms. You will never be able to see the same shape for two days." • General Appearance • Lichen is five feet two inches, and weighs a total of 110 pounds. She is not extremely buff, nor is she stick-skinny, but wiry and firm from regular exercise. As a result of spending much of her time outside, she is lightly tanned, and aside from the occasional scrapes and acne (darned hormones!) she has no distinct physical marks. Her eyes are varying shades of green, depending on the light, and she has waist-length, blonde hair, which she usually leaves down, but occasionally ties up.
• Usual Apparel • Lichen does not have a particular style of apparel, but she prefers clothing that are comfortable and allow her to move freely. Although she is also not picky about color, Lichen has found that earthy tones suit her best, and so often dresses in brown, green, and yellow shades. She is rather modest and will avoid overly revealing parts of her body.
• Interesting Traits • All in all, Lichen is a rather plain girl, and the only real oddity about her may be the slingshot that she occasionally keeps holstered to her hip. She bears no tattoos, piercings, or other discerning marks. ✬ Locker-room Gossip ✬"I think it's fun to know the person little by little through looking at their personality." • Character Summary • Normally, when she is alone, Lichen is of incredibly mild temperament but often able to keep herself entertained. Usually driven by curiosity, she will not hesitate to explore or observe something that is new to her. Likewise, with people, she is not shy about asking them personal questions if she feels the need to know, even if she has met that person only for the first time. Nevertheless, she does not press the issue if they refuse to disclose certain information to her; more than use the information, she only absorbs it. Around others, she loses her bland temperament and comes alive, seeming to onlookers like a lit candle; Lichen maintains a cheerful, optimistic disposition and is inclined to making people feel comfortable around her. In fact, her one goal in life is to hear the words “When I see Lichen, I become really happy!” and once is not enough. This explains her extremely outgoing personality (she may unwaveringly approach anyone, anytime) and her upbeat style of life. Furthermore, her school work takes the backseat when there is a friend, or stranger, in need of a peppy companion. Despite what some people may think, Lichen is hardly shallow; yes, it is important for people to be happy, but forcing happiness is not always the solution, she has learned. She realizes the importance of listening as well as being bubbly in helping out a fellow being in need. Most importantly, although she delights in making people happy, she is not a pushover nor a suck-up, and is always true to herself.
When faced with a challenge, Lichen accepts enthusiastically even if she knows it is impossible to win (exception being when the challenge is a matter of life or death).
When angry or sad or in any way upset, which is rare, Lichen withdraws into herself, refusing to talk about what bothers her rather than openly raging or expressing herself. There had been times when she shut herself up for days, and even now, her friends and family do not know what had been the matter. If it is a mild case of anger or sadness, she may reveal it in an easy manner, as if it is only a joke, but otherwise will keep to herself.
In school, she learns actively, raising her hand and asking or answering questions as called for, and she generally enjoys receiving an education. Lichen will try hard in her studies, but she will drop everything immediately if someone needs her.
• Likes • Lichen enjoys being on the move, exercising her body, and feeling her muscles flex with the movement. She is a bundle of energy, which is incredibly useful for a person of her personality. This energy also feeds her desire for experience and discovery, so that she may keep learning without wearing herself out. More than anything, however, she loves being a companion and a dear friend. The key, for her, is to enjoy life.
• Dislikes • There are few things Lichen dislikes, besides the obvious. One is when a person absolutely refuses to be happy. This may sound strange, but Lichen has met more than enough people who simply prevent themselves from being happy, spouting nonsense like, “I don’t deserve happiness,” or “There’s no point, because we’re all going to die anyway,” and other irrational reasons of that sort. Another, obviously, is when she feels she has wronged or failed a friend, and to punish herself, she may isolate herself for weeks, wondering where she went wrong, and pondering how she can fix those wrongs. On the side, she absolutely despises spicy food, and will obstinately refuse to eat it.
• Obstructions • One of Lichen’s greatest fears is, quite predictably, failing as a friend. The one thing that could be possibly worse would be to be accused of as being shallow, or insensitive, or a mere sycophant.
The worst habit she has is cloistering— locking herself up and throwing away the key when something goes wrong. When this happens, she is incapable of being touched, and only she can draw herself out. Other bad habits include asking strangers personal questions and giving free rein to her curiosity, which is obviously not always the smartest thing to do. ✬ Schoolyard Games ✬"If you wish to dream, do so in your dreams." • Element • Earth.
• Gift • Lichen has the ability to communicate with plants. It works rather simply: she talks to them. They don’t quite answer back with words, or even with mind-speak, but rather with something like feelings, which can be frustrating for Lichen in certain situations. This power is nothing like actually manipulating plants to do her will; she cannot move them around forcefully. If she wants a tree to bear fruit outside of its seasonal cycle, for example, she must ask it to, and the tree may or may not submit to her wishes.
Consequently, it is near impossible to utilize this power in battle. There were times when plants and trees had put themselves in the way of attacks directed towards Lichen, but that was of their own will, not of Lichen’s asking. These things do not happen commonly at all, because for plants to have sacrificed themselves for her like this, they must have had to have loved her immensely, and then to have been willing to die for her. In normal fighting situations, Lichen would not be able to ask plants to rescue her on time, nor would they be able to react quickly enough, even if they did choose to move for her. • Weapon • The one weapon Lichen knows how to use effectively is a slingshot, which she wears holstered to her hip; she is a fair shot. She would rather not use it, and on school campus, she never feels the need to have it around; although she may not excel at it, Lichen is fully capable of hand-to-hand combat. She may take the slingshot along with a couple of stones with her outside of school, however, just in case. ✬ Background Check ✬""Looks like you've managed to take a step into a new world." • Birthday • August 3

• Siblings • Oleander Aiden Moss- Older brother (alive)
• History • - Spoiler:
The metaphorical world Lichen was born in is a world where names are key in one’s identity. Her mother, for example, used to bear the last name “Coal” before marriage, which told people she and her side of the family were of the fire element. After marrying Sage Moss, who was of the earth element, Flammina Coal changed her last name to “Moss”, though her first name still informed people that she remained a fire-user.
Flammina and Sage Moss bore a son, first named Aiden, and when he expressed his father’s earth element, he was christened Oleander. When Lichen was born two years after Oleander, she was called Catherine. For three years, she remained Catherine, until she was found under a bare tree in their wintery backyard with an apple in her hand.
“Where did you get that apple from?” Flammina, her mother, had asked the little three-year-old girl. In response, she had pointed up at the naked tree.
“I asked it really nicely for fruit, because I was hungry,” Catherine had replied.
Henceforth, Catherine was called Lichen, and Catherine became her middle name, as was the tradition in this land.
Lichen lived a rather normal and uneventful life, despite rare periods when she would withdraw into herself in times of depression. She would eventually bounce back, though, so this was of no huge concern to her family. Near the end of Lichen’s sophomore year, she receded again, for reasons unknown to her family. They expected her to spring back, as always, but summer vacation passed, and there was no improvement. The once-lively Lichen had withered and dried into a quiet, muted existence. She hung around in the backyard, as always, but there was no more chasing squirrels or catching falling leaves; she only sat in the shade and stared into a world that her family could not see.
Her birthday came around, and nothing changed. The mini family celebration was somber and mirthless, and presents could not cheer her up; Lichen just opened them, thanked her benefactors politely, and set them aside.
“Lichen, what in the world could be bothering you?” Flammina had begged her desperately to reveal what ailed her, but of course, Lichen would not say.
“Is there anything you would like? Anything we could do for you?” Sage had asked, deeply concerned for his daughter’s well-being.
There was a moment of silence, but Lichen answered shortly, as if she had thought up the solution all along.
“I’d like to go somewhere else, please. Somewhere where I can rebuild myself.”
Her family was at first bewildered with this strange and extreme request, but they knew already what they had to do. They knew already that it was near impossible for anyone else to coax her out of her depression. They knew they had to send her away, as was requested. They just hoped it would work.
And thus, Lichen was enrolled as a junior into Luz Dura Academy, where she hoped to “rebuild herself.” ✬ Transcript ✬"“What good are dreams, if all you do is work? There's more to life than hitting the books, I hope you know."
• RP Example • - Spoiler:
Lichen pranced around in the green wilderness that was the backyard of her home, chasing wild sparrows, spying on squirrels, and flouncing to catch the golden leaves of the sweet birch tree in the center of it all. Hours had already passed with this frivolous activity, and she grew quite hungry. Of course, she could always go inside and ask her mother for her delicious apple pie, but why go inside when you could obtain food outside? Lichen quit her fluttering about and approached a nearby persimmon tree. She laid a hand on its sandy bark, and felt the coarse wood under her calloused fingertips.
“I know it’s not time yet…” she murmured, stroking the bark, “but will you let me have some of your fruit?”
Almost at once, the tree responded, several of its branches exploding with ripe orange persimmons. This tree knew her, grew up with her, and was completely and utterly willing to yield to her.
Smiling, Lichen lifted herself onto her toes and plucked one of the tree’s many gifts.
“Thank you,” Lichen said, patting the persimmon tree’s proud trunk.
She could feel its satisfaction sweep through her hand and into her own body. She turned and plopped down at the tree’s base, her back supported by its thin trunk, and bit ravenously into the persimmon. When its juices slipped past her wrists, she lapped it up, and soon, she was reaching for another persimmon, and another, and another, and another. Lichen ended up with quite a large pile of seeds. She was about to take another chunk out of her ninth? tenth? fruit when she heard a voice call from a high window of her house.
“Lichen? Are those persimmons?” Her mother, Flammina, was leaning out the window, auburn hair pulled back in a ponytail, and Lichen guessed it was laundry day.
“Yeah, Mom. They’re really good.” Lichen held up her half-eaten fruit for her mother to see.
“Bring some up, then,” Flammina replied, laughing. “Let’s make persimmon pies. Your brother likes those.”
Lichen nodded, and her mother disappeared from the window, presumably to put away the rest of the laundry and to ready the kitchen for their pies. She hoisted herself up to her feet and dusted off the seat of her pants before leaning down to pick up the pile of seeds.
“Thanks,” she said again to the tree that had fed her. “Soon, you’ll have some friends.” She rattled the seeds in her hand as if to let the tree know it had new companions coming before slipping them into her pocket.
Lichen harvested more of the persimmons, as much as she could fit into the spontaneously-made basket of her shirt, and when she turned to go back into the house, she could swear she heard the persimmon tree rustle in content.
